Two Premier League managers on shortlist as possible replacements for Enzo Maresca
Chelsea ended their four-game winless streak after defeating Everton 2-0 in the Premier League. The result also kept them in the top four with 28 points, five points behind Aston Villa. However, after the match, Maresca surprisingly did not sound satisfied with the current situation.
Asked about Malo Gusto’s performance, Maresca said: “This is the reason why I praise the players, because with so many problems they are doing very well after a complicated week. The last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because many people didn’t support us. So, I am very happy for Malo at that moment, that the effort from Malo and the rest showed that they are all there and want to help this club.”
Although he did not mention anyone by name, The Sun reported that his comments were aimed at co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Chelsea’s board may not be pleased with the Italian coach’s remarks, and Maresca could risk losing his job.
If Maresca leaves the club, here are four possible replacements.
Oliver Glasner
Oliver Glasner is currently regarded as one of the best managers in the Premier League. With a solid squad at Crystal Palace, he has guided his team to fifth place, while also winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield. Glasner is out of contract at the end of the season, making him an attractive option for many clubs. However, if Chelsea want to appoint him, they may have to wait until June, as Crystal Palace are unlikely to release him mid-season.
Liam Rosenior
The Englishman is another candidate if Chelsea decide to replace Maresca. Currently working at Strasbourg, Rosenior could join easily as the French side is one of Chelsea’s sister clubs. Strasbourg are seventh in Ligue 1 and top of their Conference League group with a perfect record after five matches. However, Rosenior would be a controversial choice due to his limited experience, especially at a big club.
Andoni Iraola
Another option is Andoni Iraola. The Spanish coach works within a modern football structure at Bournemouth and has shown he can cope with high squad turnover. However, this would be a risky appointment, as Bournemouth are currently struggling, sitting 15th in the league. His ability to manage big matches, something Maresca has handled relatively well, also remains questionable.
Frank Lampard
This would be a surprise move, but Lampard could be considered as an interim option. He previously returned to Chelsea in an interim role after Graham Potter was sacked, although the results were poor. Now, with a young, deep squad, and a manager who understands the club, Chelsea could potentially improve. However, Lampard is currently managing Coventry City, who are top of the Championship, which could make a return difficult.
