Sunday Shocker: Man United outclass Arsenal to storm back into Top 4 contention
Both sides made only minor changes to their starting line-ups. Arsenal welcomed Piero Hincapié back at left-back, while Gabriel Jesus started alongside Leandro Trossard and Bukayo Saka in attack. For United, Kobbie Mainoo partnered Casemiro in midfield, Patrick Dorgu was deployed on the left wing, and Bryan Mbeumo led the line as the central striker.
As the higher-rated side, Arsenal dominated possession early on and created several promising chances. The first notable opportunity inside the opening 20 minutes came from Martín Zubimendi’s header from a free-kick, but Lammens was able to deal with it. In the 28th minute, however, Arsenal took the lead when Saka’s delivery from the right deflected off Lisandro Martínez, with the United centre-back inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.
United responded quickly and did not have to wait long for an equaliser. Just eight minutes later, a mistake from Zubimendi allowed Mbeumo to collect the ball on the edge of the penalty area, and the forward made no mistake in finishing to level the score. The first half ended 1-1, and neither manager made changes at the break.
In the 50th minute, Dorgu stunned the Emirates with a powerful left-footed strike to put United 2-1 ahead. Mikel Arteta was then forced into action, introducing Viktor Gyökeres, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino and Ben White in an attempt to turn the game around. Arsenal pushed hard for an equaliser but continued to waste key chances. Eventually, in the 84th minute, Merino found the net from a corner, with the goal awarded after a VAR review.
However, United struck back almost immediately. Just two minutes later, Matheus Cunha sealed the win with a superb long-range effort, restoring United’s lead and making it 3-2.
After the match, Carrick praised his players’ efforts. “Massively proud. I think it was different from last week. It was always going to be different today. They put us under a lot of pressure in different ways,” Carrick said.
The victory lifts Manchester United back into the Top 4 on 38 points, moving ahead of Chelsea by one point and Liverpool by two. Their upcoming fixtures appear favourable, with matches against Fulham (1 February), Tottenham (7 February), West Ham (11 February) and Everton (24 February).
For Arsenal, they'll turn their attention to the Champions League, hosting Kairat on Wednesday, 28 January, before returning to Premier League action on 31 January.
