Neymar extends Santos contract, sets sights on 2026 World Cup spot
Neymar said in the official announcement: “2025 was a special and challenging year for me - a time of joy and of overcoming obstacles that I was only able to face thanks to your love. 2026 has arrived, and destiny could not be different. Santos is my place. Here I am at home, safe and happy. And it is with you that I want to achieve the rest of my dreams.”
The 33-year-old player returned to his boyhood club Santos in January 2025 after his contract with Al-Hilal was terminated. Over the season, he scored 11 goals in 34 appearances and remained the club’s key player, wearing the captain’s armband.
However, Neymar continued to struggle with injuries, mainly hamstring problems, which forced him to miss 17 matches. Despite this, he chose to play through pain and scored five goals in the final five games, helping Santos avoid relegation and remain in Brazil’s top division.
In mid-December, Neymar suffered another injury and underwent minor surgery on his left knee. He is now focused on recovery and preparation for the new season, with the goal of earning a place in Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The 2026 tournament could be Neymar’s final chance to play at a World Cup. Brazil’s all-time top scorer turns 34 this year, and his recent injury record raises concerns about his fitness for a tournament where he would be 38. Despite this, Neymar remains determined to fight for his place.
Neymar has not played for Brazil since 2023, when he suffered an ACL injury during World Cup qualifying. He spent more than a year sidelined and has yet to return to the national team. In October last year, head coach Carlo Ancelotti said Neymar must be fully fit to be considered.
The forward is currently 15 appearances away from becoming Brazil’s most capped player, which would see him surpass Cafu’s record.
Before focusing on the World Cup, Neymar and Santos will begin their new campaign in the Sao Paulo State Championship on 10 January, then they will face Chapecoense at Brazilian Serie A on 28 January.
