Man United destroy Wolves on Cunha’s return day

Facing a Wolves side that had not won a single match since the start of the season, Manchester United scored four goals, with Bruno Fernandes netting a brace. This victory lifts United to sixth place, just one point behind fourth-placed Crystal Palace.

Today’s game marked the return of Matheus Cunha, who left Wolves in the summer. The Brazilian attacker started for Manchester United alongside Mason Mount and Bryan Mbeumo in the front three. However, the spotlight did not fall on Cunha, as Bruno Fernandes delivered an outstanding performance.

Right from the opening minutes, United pushed forward in search of an early goal. Both Diogo Dalot and Mbeumo were denied by Sam Johnstone. In the 25th minute, United finally broke the deadlock after Fernandes capitalised on Wolves’ defensive mistake. Amorim’s side continued pushing to extend the lead. Wolves still showed threat on the counter, and one of their attacks paid off when Jean-Ricner Bellegarde converted David Møller Wolfe’s cut-back to level the score.

The first half ended 1-1 before United surged ahead early in the second half. Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount needed only ten minutes to score twice, putting United 3-1 up. In the 81st minute, Bruno Fernandes scored his second of the match from the penalty spot, sealing a 4-1 win at Molineux.

With this victory, Manchester United now have 25 points after 15 matches, with 7 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses, sitting sixth in the table. Rúben Amorim’s team are one point behind Chelsea and Crystal Palace, but only three points ahead of 12th-placed Newcastle. Consistency is still lacking, but the squad is clearly improving week by week.

Next week, United return to Old Trafford to face Bournemouth on Monday, followed by Aston Villa on December 21st, Newcastle on December 27th and Wolves again on the final day of the year. As for Wolves, they remain winless this season and currently sit bottom of the table. This is their eighth straight loss, and with upcoming fixtures against Arsenal, Brentford, Liverpool and Manchester United before the New Year, the outlook for early 2026 appears bleak.
