Enzo Maresca rejects multi-million pound pay-off from Chelsea
Chelsea stunned the football world in the New Year by parting ways with manager Enzo Maresca. Reports suggest the relationship between the Italian coach and the club’s hierarchy had deteriorated over a prolonged period. Sources claimed Maresca did not have full control at the club, with several decisions influenced by the ownership.
As a result, The Sun reported that Maresca rejected a pay-off from Chelsea and left the club immediately. The Italian had signed a five-year contract worth £4 million per season when he arrived from Leicester. With three and a half years remaining on his deal, he would have been entitled to around £14 million.
Last month, after a 2-0 victory over Everton, Maresca hinted that he had endured “the worst 48 hours” of his time at the club. The comment was seen as a sign that tensions had reached a breaking point, although he offered no further explanation at the time. In hindsight, it appeared to underline the collapse of the relationship.
Maresca also denied several accusations, including rumours that he forced key players such as Cole Palmer and Reece James to play despite recently returning from injury. According to sources inside the club, those decisions were made by the medical team, not the head coach.
In addition, there were reports suggesting Maresca had used Chelsea as a “stepping stone” for a potential move to Manchester City, claims the Italian strongly denied. This was said to have led to a heated argument with the board, particularly co-owner Behdad Eghbali. Feeling disrespected due to interference from above and mounting criticism from supporters, Maresca reportedly concluded his position had become untenable.
Ultimately, both parties agreed to part ways, leaving Chelsea searching for a new manager for the remainder of the season. Current rumours suggest Strasbourg head coach Liam Rosenior is the leading candidate, a potential appointment that has already drawn criticism, particularly Strasbourg supporters.
Chelsea, meanwhile, must quickly refocus on their Premier League campaign, with a crucial clash against Manchester City scheduled for tonight.
