Alexander Isak to miss the rest of the season for Liverpool
Last Sunday, Liverpool faced Tottenham in Gameweek 17 of the Premier League. The Reds secured a 2-1 victory with goals from Isak and Hugo Ekitike. However, the result was overshadowed by concern for Liverpool fans after their $150 million forward Alexander Isak suffered an injury following a sliding tackle from Micky van de Ven.
The Swedish forward was forced off the pitch just 15 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Conor Bradley. Isak was taken straight to hospital after the match to assess the severity of the injury and determine his recovery timeline. According to The Athletic, Isak has suffered a fracture in the lower part of his leg, which could rule him out for several months or even the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
This would be a major blow for Liverpool, who are already short of attacking options. With Mohamed Salah away at AFCON and Cody Gakpo injured, Liverpool would be left with Ekitike as their only natural striker. As a result, reports suggest the club could enter the January transfer window to find a replacement for Isak, at least until the end of the season.
Isak has endured a difficult first season at Liverpool. After a turbulent departure from Newcastle, he missed the entire pre-season. He finally made his debut on 17 September and has since made 15 appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist. While those numbers have yet to justify his $150 million price tag, fans remain hopeful that he can still turn things around once fully fit.
With multiple attackers unavailable, sources say Liverpool’s board are considering moves in the January window. One reported target is Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo, who has a £70 million release clause that could be activated in the upcoming transfer period.
Liverpool will face Wolves on Boxing Day, 27 December, in their final match of 2025. They will then take on Leeds United in the New Year, followed by Fulham on 4 January and Arsenal on 9 January.
